(KTRK/CNN/Meredith) – A Texas man found a baby girl alone in a parking lot shortly after someone stole her parent’s vehicle, police said.

Stephen Ward called police when he spotted the 4-month-old in a car seat Monday night.

“I was shocked,” he said. “I saw this baby seat in the middle of the parking lot, and I thought it looked a little odd.”

Galveston police said the infant’s mother and father drove to a laundromat around 7 p.m. They were unloading their vehicle, making trips back-and-forth, when the suspect jumped in and took off.

Police said at some point the thief realized a baby was in the backseat and found a well-lit area to place the child, about 10 blocks away from the laundromat.

Ward said he was headed to a Church’s Chicken restaurant when he spotted the baby’s car seat in a neighboring parking lot.

"I just happened to be at the right place at the right time," Ward said.

The baby was eventually reunited with her parents. Police have not yet located the car or suspect.

Sgt. Xavier Hancock warned other parents to be more cautious.

"While we understand that household chores can be taxing we would caution you again to not leave your child in the car even momentarily because things like this can happen,” said Sgt. Xavier Hancock.

Ward said he credits his love for chicken and biscuits for leading him to the baby.

"The real hero hit here is Church's Chicken because if it wasn't for those honey biscuits I probably wouldn't have even gone down that way," he said. "I probably would've gone home."
