HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

One person is in critical condition and another was seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident on Route 5 in Holyoke Tuesday afternoon.

Holyoke Police Lt. Cruz told Western Mass News the driver lost control of their truck and crashed into a tree at the intersection of Northampton Street (Route 5) and Lincoln Street around 3 p.m.

The truck had to be cut in half to extricate the driver and the passenger, according to Lt. Cruz.

Holyoke Fire Captain Kevin Cavagnac said it took crews 15 minutes to remove the top of the truck, and to roll the front dash off of the lap of the driver.

As of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night, Holyoke Police Lt. Albert said both victims remain at Baystate Medical Center.

The area was closed off for several hours while an accident reconstruction team investigated the crash.

Lt. Albert said the area was reopened around 7:30 p.m.
