Police: Chicopee man shot while turkey hunting in South Hadley

SOUTH HADLEY, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

A Chicopee man is in the hospital after being shot while turkey hunting Tuesday morning.

South Hadley Police Chief Steve Parentela said that around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, police received a call from Holyoke Medical Center indicating that a 37-year-old Chicopee man received a gunshot wound to the back while out turkey hunting in South Hadley.

Investigators determined that the incident occurred off of Ferry Street in South Hadley.

Katie Gronendyke, spokesperson for the state's Executive Office of Environmental and Energy Affairs, told Western Mass news that Environmental Police were notified around 9:30 a.m. that a hunter had been shot by another hunter and that the victim was transported by other hunters to an area hospital.

Gronendyke added that the victim was then transported to a local trauma center and that the man's condition is not immediately known.

The investigation remains active and ongoing by South Hadley Police and Mass. Environmental Police.
