SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Springfield Police have arrested the man they say is responsible for a hit-and-run that sent a young girl to the hospital Tuesday night.

Edgar Diaz, 32, of Springfield was arrested for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and having an uninsured motor vehicle.

Ryan Walsh, Spokesperson for the Springfield Police Department said the young girl was hit by Diaz's pickup truck on Montmorenci Street around 7 p.m.

Police said Diaz abandoned the truck and ran.

Walsh said it was witnesses to the incident who caught up with Diaz and physically restrained him until police arrived.

Diaz was taken to Baystate Medical Center for facial injuries. It is unclear if those injuries were caused by the crash or if the good Samaritans were responsible.

The young girl that police said Diaz hit suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
