At around 9 p.m. Saturday night, Springfield Police were called in to investigate a shooting on Margerie Street.
When they arrived, they say they found an adult male who had been shot in the head.
That person was taken to the hospital, but they did not survive their injuries, marking at least the sixth homicide in the city this year.
While there has been an uptick in violence this past month or so, police say crime remains down this year by 6%, and 45% over the last 5 years.
Since those numbers still exist, it means crime is still happening.
Springfield Police say that while they don't have a suspect in custody they have identified a person of interest, but nobody is in custody at this time.
Margarie Street was shut down for some time while a number of officers, searched the area for evidence, including forensics teams, who made frequent trips to and from their van.
Investigators from the Springfield Major Crimes Unit knocking on doors were on scene as well, looking for any clues they could find.
If you have any information regarding this matter, you are encouraged to call Springfield Police.
