SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Authorities have identified the person who was shot and killed over the weekend in Springfield.

James Leydon, spokesperson for the Hampden County District Attorney's office, said that 23-year-old Paul Finegan of Springfield died after he was shot Saturday on Margerie Street in Springfield.

Police were called to 33 Margerie Street around 9 p.m. Saturday for a report of shots fired.

When officers arrived, they found Finegan suffering from a gunshot wound in the backyard.  He was transported to Baystate Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

"At the time of the shooting, a birthday party for a three year old was being held at the residence to which officers responded," Leydon said, adding that police secured the remain party-goers for questioning, as well as ask the family for help identifying as many attendees as possible.

Investigators believe that the victim may have known the shooter and believe that the incident was not random.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Springfield Police Homicide Unit at (413) 787-6355 or 'Text-A-Tip' to CRIMES (274637) and in the message, type SOLVE and your tip.
