The Fourth of July fireworks in Springfield could be held at another location.
That's according to a spokesperson for Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.
There's construction happening at Riverfront Park, making it difficult to have the fireworks there.
However, the Spirit of Springfield, who runs the display, said that it's not a done deal just yet.
"It's good. I like it. It's a nice place, seeing and watching it," said Christina Nieves of Springfield.
For 34 years, on July 4, thousands gather at Riverfront Park in downtown Springfield for the Spirit of Springfield's fireworks display.
"Yeah, the kids enjoy it, they like it," Nieves added.
Right now, Riverfront Park is closed. The park is getting renovated for Springfield's 9/11 memorial and it won't be done until September 11.
Sarno's office told Western Mass News that the location for this year's fireworks could be at another place, but where it will be is still up in the air.
Sarno is confident the show will go on.
"The fireworks, with the Spirit of Springfield, will take place and we look to announce further information in the very near future," Sarno explained.
However, Sarno wouldn't say where they will be.
"You'll have a comment coming up very shortly. The fireworks are going to happen," Sarno added.
However, Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt said that nothing is a done deal. She noted that Spirit of Springfield is trying to do everything they can to keep the fireworks at Riverfront Park.
"The Fourth of July fireworks will go on as scheduled. It's going to be as big as it's ever been and we're working on logistics right now," Matt said.
Matt understands the park is under construction, but said that there are other options.
"Riverfront Park is under construction, but that doesn't keep us from using the bridge. The Spirit of Springfield isn't looking at any other place. We're hoping to shoot them off the Memorial Bridge as they've always been," Matt added.
Nieves said, "It wouldn't be the same. We're used to it being at the same place, so it's a big change."
Again, the mayor told us there will be an announcement coming soon about where the fireworks could be, but Matt said there is no chance that it will not happen.
