Students are presenting their principal at Ludlow High School with proposals that would make the dress code more gender-neutral.

This all started after an online petition was created claiming the dress code was "selective."

In the petition, Emily Midwood claims her younger sister wore this romper to school, exposing her shoulders.  says administrators sent her home to change.

When she returned to class, the school marked her late.

Midwood hopes her petition will make the dress code more gender-neutral.  She told Western Mass News she also worked with the student council to rewrite the dress code and hopes to meet with the principal about this very soon.

"Muscle tanks that show their whole body...why are shoulders that's distracting?  To the enforcement is selective and the dress code specifically targets women and want to make it more neutral," Midwood noted.

Now, the proposal states some of the following:

  • Shirts and dresses must have fabric in the front, back, and on the sides.
  • Clothing must cover undergarments, waistbands and bra straps excluded

As for what's not allowable:

  • Clothing may not depict, advertise, or advocate the use of alcohol, tobacco. and marijuana
  • Clothing may not use or depict hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

Western Mass News reached out to Ludlow Public School Supt. Todd Gazda.  He said:

"Dress codes are always a hot topic in public schools this time of year.  Schools are always trying to balance the students' rights to self expression with the need to ensure that student attire does not distract from or disrupt the educational process. To some extent, cultural norms can have an influence on what is or is not acceptable dress and those norms change with the times which is one reason such policies need to be reviewed. The administration at Ludlow High School is working with the student council with respect to possible revisions of the high school dress code."
