A popular summer event in West Springfield is canceled this year.
It is true that the 'Taste of the Valley' event has been canceled, for now.
The West Springfield Rotary Club hosted the annual event.
Mayor William Reichelt, who is a member of the organization told Western Mass News they were simply not making their bottom line.
"They have to kinda decide, are we going to move it, are we going to keep it, or are we going to take a step back," Mayor Reichelt said.
The event takes a lot of man power to pull off every year, and it costs big bucks.
"For them it’s a big fundraiser to give back community grants. So if they’re not making any money, they’re not giving any grants, it kind of defeats the purpose," Reichelt added.
The Taste of the Valley is a time-stamped tradition, but at least for now they are going to shake things up.
Instead, the rotary is looking to offer a few concerts this summer.
"One of the big draws of the taste is the concerts. Get some good bands, get food trucks to show up, serve alcohol and then see if they can make some money that way," Reichelt continued.
Some say it might not be the best substitution.
"We have a very active concert season anyway so I guess it will be fine. I don’t think it will be the same kind of draw that the taste was," said West Springfield resident Deb Arnold.
While the fate of Taste of the Valley is up in the air, it’s not time to put a fork in it just yet.
"Next year maybe we can bring the taste back, perhaps in a different form. Or the concert series is somehow going to be the new taste," Reichelt noted.
The exact plans for the concerts are not yet known, but Western Mass News will be sure to bring you that information as soon as its available.
