New snacks available at JFK Middle School in Northampton are sparking some strong opinions among parents.
The school now offers an array of items including potato chips, Cheetos, and cakes.
The information about snack options is available on the school’s website where there’s a mix of healthy and unhealthy options.
Canned fruit, Greek yogurt, and mozzarella string cheese, are among the options available as snacks for students at JFK Middle School.
In addition to those healthier options, students can also purchase Doritos, Cheetos, potato chips, and strawberry shortcake.
The ready availability of junk food in schools is a hot topic for parents like Philip Thurston who has two elementary school-aged children who will someday soon attend JFK Middle School.
“Children should learn about healthy eating from their homes and also from their schools. I know that teachers in schools when I was growing up told me about the different kinds of foods that we all need to eat to complement each other," said Thurston.
The added snack options could generate more sales for the school, but also leaves students an opportunity to make choices for themselves.
“I sincerely think the schools but mostly the parents and the families have a real obligation to their children what foods are good for them," Thurston noted.
Western Mass News tried to get in touch with both the superintendent and the director of food services, but neither has responded to our questions about the reasons for these added snacks.
