Bear sighting in Southwick

Posted: Updated:

A black bear was spotted roaming through backyards Friday afternoon on South Longyard Road.

The bear decided to pay a visit to a couple of bird feeders and then proceeded to take a nap under a tree.

He eventually woke up and went on his way.

Southwick Police is urging the public to not go anywhere near these animals if spotted.

As cute and friendly they may seem, they are actually quite dangerous. They also would like to remind you that you can not outrun a bear, no matter how fast you think you are.

Black bears can run at an excess of 30 m.p.h.

Police also encourage you to put away your bird feeders, because birds already have numerous sources of food since it is Spring time.

Bird feeders, at this point in time, will only attract squirrels and bears in addition to birds.
