If you’ve been getting scam calls, there could be a reason why.
An expert says this time of year is the most popular for people to ‘spoof’ your number.
Many of us here at Western Mass News have been receiving scam calls and text messages more frequently over the last few weeks, and it turns out we’re not alone.
Apparently, there are apps available for download that hackers use to ‘spoof’ your number calling someone from one number, but it shows up as yours, or one similar to yours so it looks familiar and you answer it.
“The problem is that they spoof different numbers all the time. There isn’t a one size fits all solution,” said Stan Prager with GoGeeks Computer Rescue in East Longmeadow.
You can go into your settings and block individual numbers but you can’t stop these hackers from finding your number and calling you.
“You just want to be skeptical whenever you’re getting a telephone call from anyone offering you any kind of service,” Prager noted.
Prager noted that this time year is a popular one for scammers and spoofers alike.
“What tends to launch it is tax time," he said.
That can linger for weeks, and Prager said the best thing you can do is block any individual number that you suspect is a scam caller.
