Baystate Medical Center and the Hampden County District Attorney's office are partnering for a gun buyback event Saturday.
They will be accepting guns in exchange for Big Y gift cards.
Do you have a gun in your home you are looking to get rid of? The D.A.'s office and Baystate Medical Center want to help.
They will buy back your unwanted gun on Saturday. It just needs to be unloaded.
"Guns must be in working condition and unloaded. We are accepting ammunition as well," said Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni.
If you are looking to sell a gun, there are no ID's required and no questions asked.
"We are focused on getting unwanted guns out of folks homes, so they don't fall into the wrong hands," Gulluni added.
Most guns will be purchased in exchange for a $50 Big Y gift card. Any assault-style weapon will be $100 worth of gift cards.
This is important to preventing crime in the area, but it's also important to preventing accidents. That's why Baystate Medical Center is getting involved.
"It's for harm reduction, public safety, reducing suicide, and accidental discharge and domestic violence," said Ida Konderwicz with Baystate Medical Center.
Organizers told Western Mass News gun buyback events like this in the past have been successful. They are hoping this one will be the same.
"In our last buyback, we had our community turn in 333 guns, so we are hoping we can match that as well and just make homes safer," Konderwicz added.
The event is Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Raymond Sullivan Safety Complex at 1212 Carew Street in Springfield.
