A Philadelphia man is facing a number of drug and gun charges after he was arrested Monday afternoon inside a West Springfield motel.

West Springfield police said they responded to the Super 8 Motel on Riverdale Street around 12:41 p.m. for an unresponsive male in a room.

When police arrived, they said the man inside the room, who was identified as Maurice Nelson, ignored officers demands as they shouted through the door and an unlocked window.

When officers entered the room through the window, they said Nelson was sitting on the bed and was within reach of a loaded .32 caliber handgun.

Police said they immediately took control of the gun and placed Nelson in temporary restraints.
