SHUTESBURY, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

A 20 year-old man from Holyoke was taken to the hospital Saturday after almost drowning in Lake Wyola.

Shutesbury Fire Chief Tibbets tells Western Mass News they were dispatched around 2:00 p.m. to 94 Lakeview Road where lifeguards were trying to revive a swimmer who was recovered from the lake.

It took Shutesbury Fire Department less than eight minutes to reach Lake Wyola.

The man experienced a medical emergency, but it is not believed to have played a factor in the drowning.

Lifeguards had rescued the man and administered CPR by the time they arrived.

Chief Tibbets went on to say that when he was recovered, he had a pulse and was breathing, but was not conscious.

Other towns, including Amherst, were called in to assist.

Amherst Fire Chief Tim Nelson tells us the man, who has not been identified yet, was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

We'll provide you with more information as soon as we know more.
