WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -

Part of Elm Street in West Springfield is closed off due to a gas leak.

Deputy Chief Borsari of the West Springfield Fire Department tells us that crews were digging to replace a gas line when they accidentally struck the feed line to another building.

West Springfield Fire worked quickly to evacuate three buildings as they tried to mend the line.

Deputy Chief Borsari went on to tell us that only the Northbound side of Elm Street is closed off.

No word yet on when the street is expected to reopen.

But just before noon the West Springfield Police Department reported that everyone had returned to the buildings that were evacuated.

At this time Elm St. southbound is still down to one lane between Central Street and Park Street. No immediate word on when that area would be re-opened.

Western Mass News will provide an update as we learn more.
