Today we are getting our first look at how Springfield police plan to keep the downtown area safe around the new MGM Springfield, which opens next month.

A new police Metro Unit Substation is now up and running.

So why did police decided to open this substation?

It's located on Dwight Street and police hope that its presence here in downtown will help casino goers and those that live here, feel safer.

Springfield police will have 3 kiosks and one substation and its all thanks to the MGM community partner agreement.

The police department is leasing the building for 5 years and in its first year will cost just over $40,000.

Commissioner John Barbieri tells Western Mass News they chose this location behind the MassMutual Center because they expect it to be one of the most populated areas.
However, the officers will always be out on the streets patrolling the area.

“The goal here is to have the officers work right directly in the community they’re policing so they’ll report to work here, they’ll leave work here, any overtime will be reported out of here. They’ll go directly from outside the door, right into the area they’re working in," explains Barbieri.

Both the mayor and commissioner wanted to reiterate that this does not take away from any current police staffing, and that if anything...it’s adding to it.

The grand opening for the casino is Friday August 24th.
