A Chicopee business stepped in to help to a family that hasn't had air conditioning for weeks as the father battles liver failure and the family struggles to make ends meet.
On Wednesday night, a Facebook post was put out by the Tolliver family’s aunt saying that they needed financial help to get their air conditioning repaired.
Within a matter of hours, Kaeble Oil in Chicopee went to the home to fix it.
41-year-old Joel Tolliver of Chicopee has been in an out of the hospital since June.
He has no paid sick time or disability benefits, so when the family’s air conditioning stopped working in June, they simply couldn’t afford to get it repaired.
“It’s been rough. It gets to be like 95 degrees in the living room and that’s kind of where we spend our time together as a family," said Theresa Tolliver.
Theresa told Western Mass News the only family time they’ve had are visits to the hospital, and she says it’s been hard.
“Try to have a somewhat of a normal life outside of the hospital life, especially for our boys who are both in high school," she added.
She said the community has come out to support her in more ways she could’ve ever expected.
“People were making meals for us, dropping it off in a cooler. When I came home late at night from the hospital, there would be a meal for us to eat which was so helpful," she noted.
But Theresa is hopeful things will get easier now.
“He just got the green light to come home today to spend whatever time he has left with us," she said.
“He looks like his normal self. He’s been acting like his normal self to see him come home [is a] pretty good feeling," said 15-year-old Jayden Tolliver.
On Thursday evening, Kaeble Oil repaired their A/C, in hopes to give the family more comfort during this difficult time.
“You just got to be heartfelt for these people. It doesn’t matter who it is, we’re here to help them," said Technician Steve Burgen.
“It’s just amazing. I can’t even say thank you enough to everybody,” Theresa added.
She told Western Mass News the doctors say there is no cure for her husband, and they’re surprised that he’s made it this far.
Theresa said that all they can do is pray and enjoy the time they have left together, now in an air-conditioned home.
