WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - All week long, we’ve been sharing fundraising efforts happening around western Massachusetts to help the people of Ukraine. We have a follow up to a story we first brought you over the weekend. One church has been flooded with an outpouring of support that will soon be sent to those who need it most.

“When I see families being ripped apart and children crying…I said I have to do something, I can’t just sit here and do nothing,” said Holly Amanti of Southwick.

Amanti is one of the countless volunteers who has stopped by Full Gospel Church in Westfield to donate goods to the people of Ukraine.

“I don’t think I would’ve imagined how many people have responded and again just the word is humbled. We’re just humbled to see how the community has come together,” said Tanya Shut with Full Gospel Church.

We spoke with Shut and Tanya Shvyryd, who were both born in Ukraine and organized this fundraiser following an invasion of Russian forces in their homeland.

“It is tough, but we have hope that God is in control and we trust and pray that everything will be okay,” Shvyryd said.

Shvyryd told Western Mass News there are parishioners on the way to Poland to help distribute supplies now and the Westfield collection will soon follow.

“All of this behind us going into airships and being shipped to Poland and then to Lviv where they’re distributed to humanitarian organizations there,” Shvyryd added.

Meanwhile, at Westfield Public Schools, we caught up with Superintendent Stefan Czaporowski, who previewed Friday’s dress down day that will raise funds for ‘Save the Children.’

“This is going to provide food, water, medicine and also helping students who have been displaced because of the war that’s happening right now,” Czaporowski explained.

At Full Gospel Church, with donations pouring in, they’re asking for your help to get supplies to those in need as soon as possible.

“In the coming days, we plan to be here from morning to evening just packing boxes, so if anyone wants to come and help, we’d love to have you,” Shut said.

We asked what supplies they’re still looking for. They specifically mentioned medical supplies, baby items, and feminine products.

Donations will be accepted at:
