SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Crews have been able to extinguish an afternoon house fire in Springfield.
Springfield firefighters were called to the scene on Canterbury Road shortly after 12 p.m. Thursday.
Fire officials said that when they arrived, smoke could be seen coming out of the eaves of the home after the fire, which investigators believe started outside, made its way into the second floor of the home.
A Springfield police officer on-scene suffered cuts to his arm after breaking the front door’s glass to grab the doorknob and open the door in an effort to determine if anyone was inside at the time. That officer was able to get the family’s dog out safely.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
Four people, two adults and two children, have been displaced and are being helped by the Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
