Vietnam veteran to retire a year early after boss pays off his mortgage

(Meredith) — A 69-year-old Vietnam War veteran retired a year early without the stress of a monthly mortgage payment, thanks to his generous boss.

Albert Brigas has worked as a mechanic at Renown Auto Restoration in San Antonio, Texas, since 2006.

He planned on retiring after making his final mortgage payment on the home he's lived in for over two decades. Brigas thought that day would come next year. But his boss, Rudy Quinones, had other plans.

Last month, Quinones called Brigas into his office and handed him a check for about $5,000 — enough to pay off the mortgage once and for all.

The 69-year-old said he appreciates his boss' generosity, and he's excited to spend more time with his family.

“He cares. He cares about his people and what happens,” Brigas said of his boss.

Quinones did not publicly announce the good dead. Another employee, Joseph Winkler, told KENS-TV about it to spread some positivity.

"Not enough good news is out there, and this is one of those things that I thought needed to be shared," he said.

As for Quinones, he's happy that he got the chance to help Brigas and his wife ahead of the holiday season.

"To give them something they've been yearning for their whole lives. It's incredible," he said.
