ANSONIA, CONN. (Meredith/AP) — Police in Connecticut have issued an Amber Alert for an “endangered” 1-year-old girl who went missing from a home where they are investigating a suspicious death.

Ansonia police said they conducted a welfare check at home in town on Monday after a relative said they hadn’t talked to the woman who lives there in a while.

Police said the girl’s mother was found dead in what is believed to be a domestic homicide. The little girl, identified by police as Vanessa Morales, should have been at the home but was not there.

“This is a two part investigation. First is a homicide investigation, the second is a missing child investigation. We have enlarged all of our resources to investigate this case. Our main focus at the moment is finding Venessa Morales and making sure she is safe," Ansonia Police Chief Andrew Cota said during a press conference.

The police chief said the girl’s father is at his parents’ house in New Haven and is cooperating.

Venessa is described as 2-feet-2-inches tall and about 17 pounds. She also has brown hair and brown eyes.

Police said they do not have a suspect at this time but they are following several leads. Anyone with information is urged to call the Ansonia Police Department at 203-735-1885.
