A popular park in Ludlow is the backdrop of a grim discovery.

The body of a Ludlow resident was found early Tuesday morning in Whitney Park by an officer who was on-patrol.

Now, neighbors are on edge as word is spreading about the mysterious death in a typically safe and quiet area.

Around 5:30 a.m. is when that officer discovered the body of a 35-year-old man near the tennis courts.

Little is known about the man at this time as law enforcement works to notify his family.

"All in all this is a safe neighborhood. But it makes you wonder, the world is changing and it can happen anywhere," said Ludlow resident Corrine Goncalves.

The park and Howard Street was closed for some time while authorities investigated, but has since reopened.

Police told Western Mass News there is no threat to the community, and that this is an isolated incident.

"It is an unattended death at this point and that is the course of the investigation that we’re following at this point," said Ludlow Police Chief Pablo Madera.

There's no word yet on the nature and manner of his death.

"It is a safe area, a very safe area. People use this park on a daily basis. It's a dust to dawn curfew as well. Officers patrol that area, including the pool area. So it's not prone to criminal activity," said Chief Madera.

The investigation remains active and ongoing by Ludlow Police detectives and troopers assigned to the Hampden County D.A.'s office.

Western Mass News will continue to follow this story and will have more information as it becomes available.
