A truck driver is under arrest after crashing his rig into a motel near the Mass. Pike in Chicopee.

Just after 9 p.m. Wednesday the operator of a tractor-trailer fled the Pride gas station at 363 Burnett Road without paying for his fuel.

On the way out, the driver struck and caused extensive damage to two tractor trailers, then pulled into a nearby Motel 6.

"He tried to back up and I thought he was a new driver, (with) no experience. (He) tried to back up, got out of the cab, went back in, got frustrated, then started going crazy back and forth," said Gabriel Nieves.

Each corner of the motel was damged as the truck moved its way around and the driver took a large rock with him.

"Thought it was a plane that hit the building, it was that loud and that powerful. I came outside on the other side of the motel here and I see this totally ripped open like a sardine can, hits all corners, makes hairpin turn at the end and just hits the whole building, destroys everything," Anthony Pepitone said.

On the way out, he struck a van in the parking lot, which belonged to Nieves. However, Nieves could only sit back and watch.

"You can see my car was parked right there. He clipped that and kept going turned right then the cops caught him down the street," Nieves explained.

Police caught up with the truck and its driver before it got onto I-291.

Edward Lynch, 63, of Virginia, was arrested and charged with OUI, leaving the scene of a property damaged accident and larceny under $250.

The Chicopee police accident investigation team and the Massachusetts State Police helped to make that arrest.

Crews were at the Motel 6 Thursday to begin making repairs.
