Donald E. Ashe, the longtime Hampden Register of Deeds, has passed away at the age of 83.

He's been the Hampden Register of Deeds for many years and was sworn in on January, 1983.

The Secretary of Commonwealth William Galvin made the announcement Tuesday morning saying Ashe passed away after a short, but serious illness; he expressed his sorrow.

"Donald Ashe was good friend and a wonderful man who served the people of Hampden County well for several decades," Secretary Galvin said. "He took great steps to modernize the Registry of Deeds over his many years of service to the County and he will be greatly missed across Massachusetts."

We're told the Hampden Registry of Deeds will continue to operate during its usual business hours.

Kelly Cavanaugh-Kelly, who served under Ashe as First Assistant Register of Deeds, was appointed and sworn to her duties Tuesday morning.

Funeral service details for Ashe will be made available at a later time.
