The Plainfield community mourns the loss of a 9-year-old girl who was dragged and struck by a school bus Friday. The victim was identified as Summer Steele.

Police say Summer was getting dropped off at home after school when she was caught in the bus door. They say she was then dragged a short distance and struck by the bus. She was rushed to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield where she died a short time later.

A friend of the family, who wished to remain anonymous, told Western Mass News, “Everyone is hurt about it. Their child was like any other child in the community,”

The school bus company FM Kuzmeskus, Inc. released a statement about the incident. “A tragic accident occurred on October 28th in Plainfield, MA involving a school bus owned and operated by FM Kuzmeskus Inc. On board were students from a local school. Regrettably, the accident has taken the life of one of the students. We have also been in contact with school officials to apprise them of the situation. While we cannot change what happened, we are deeply grieved for this tragic loss of life.”

Detectives say the driver is cooperating during the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.

Summer attended Sanderson Academy in Plainfield. The school community is gathering at Sanderson Academy from 2 to 4 p.m. to offer support in this time of grief.

The accident remains under investigation.
