A loaded gun clip was found on the grounds of a Worcester County school Monday morning.

A grounds crew member was doing routine maintenance on the softball field at Quabbin Regional Middle-High School this morning when a loaded clip from a gun was found.

That has now prompted an investigation.

This morning, students at Quabbin Middle-High School were ordered to 'shelter-in-place' because a loaded clip from a gun was found in the softball dugout.

The middle-high school was then cleared room-by-room, checking every student's backpack - approximately 1100.

The firearm that pairs with the clip was not found and now, police are investigating.

"We need to get some facts and find out what we can about how it got there and we can find out who left it there and why. We don’t know that at this point," said Barre Police Chief John Carbone.

The school campus is on a large plot of land in Barre and the field was last used Thursday night by the softball team.

"We don’t have cameras on our backfield. We have cameras in our parking lots, in the entryway into campus. That will i’m sure be a part of the investigation to find out who may have been on campus over the course of the weekend," said Quabbin Regional High Principal Greg Devine.

Nicholas Siciliano, a Quabbin High senior, told Western Mass News that the field is really tucked back, not visible from the road. It's an odd place he thinks to find a clip like this.

"It would be tough for somebody to get out there without intentionally bringing something like that out there, so I was confused at that. I think that’s with the focal point of the confusion was. It wasn’t an area either where someone could’ve been hunting or left something by accident. It definitely is something that would’ve had to been left there intentionally or by accident by somebody who should’ve been there," Siciliano said.

The 'shelter-in-place' was lifted and classes resumed as normal at approximately 11:15 a.m.

The investigation will begin Tuesday, headed by the school's resource officer.

The full statement from the Quabbin Regional School District appears below:"On the morning of Monday, May 14, 2018, a loaded gun clip was discovered by our grounds crew in the softball dugout. The Barre Police Department was immediately contacted and the Middle/High School was put into a Shelter-In-Place at approximately 8:00 a.m.

While no firearm was found at the scene, the Barre, State Police, and State Police K-9 unit, proceeded with an abundance of caution and conducted a thorough and full search of the school buildings, grounds, and student backpacks. No weapons or ammunition were found upon their search. The Shelter-In-Place was lifted at approximately 11:15 a.m. with classes resuming as normal with a regular dismissal time.

We would like to extend our thanks to the parents and guardians of our students for their patience and understanding as we awaited information from the law enforcement agencies involved.

We also send our sincere thanks to the Barre Police Department, State Police, other law enforcement agencies, and the QRSD administration for their diligence in keeping our students safe."Copyright 2018 Western Mass News (Meredith Corporation). All rights reserved.
