Westfield police officials have identified the man who was found dead in an overturned car in a farmer's field early Wednesday morning.

The farmer reported the car in the field on Root Road at about 7 a.m., but police say the believe the accident happened around 2 a.m.

The victim was identified by Westfield police Capt. Mike McCabe as 23-year-old Alexander Schultz, of Westfield. He was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The person who reported the crash was not aware anyone was inside the car and the body wasn't discovered until police went to investigate.

McCabe said it appears as if the car went off the road near an intersection and ended up traveling about 450 feet into the field.

The car was on its roof when it was found by police.

The crash remains under investigation, but McCabe said he believes speed was a factor because of how far the vehicle traveled across the muddy field.
