A dance party hosted at the Eastfield Mall on Saturday night got out of hand when it was way over capacity and Springfield Police had to shut it down.

The party, hosted by Youthful Expressions, was planned as a safe event for teenagers to attend.

Two times the amount of people showed up than legally allowed in the space, but most weren’t able to get into the event.

Because of this, kids who got turned away became upset and they ran through the mall.

They continued to cause a disturbance, knocking down artwork inside the mall as captured by a video posted on social media.

The artwork made a big bang, causing rumors of a shooting to spread through social media.

The Eastfield Mall posted on Facebook to reassure customers that there was no shooting and it was just a rumor.

Youthful Expressions owner Zena Murray spoke with Western Mass News and explained that when the hosts realized 500 kids showed up after they had only planned for 200, they knew they had to shut the event down.

“We never intended for any harmful unsafe thing to happen and we do apologize if anyone feels that way,” Murray said. “But we have the best interest of our youth at heart and are hoping moving forward we have the community backing so we can have something for our kids to continue to do.”

No arrests were made in relation to the disturbance

Police reportedly just cleared the kids out from the mall.

Youthful Expressions still hopes to host another event like this in the future.

They said it is still a safe and fun activity for teenagers to enjoy on a Saturday night.

They are hoping to work with the mall and police so nothing like this happens in the future.
