Summer isn't even over yet, but many retailers have already started hiring seasonal employees for the holidays.
The job postings board at Future Works Career Center in Springfield is filled with job openings and upcoming hiring fairs.
"In terms of scrounging for workers, that’s everybody. Without exception, if you are posting a job, you are in a dogfight for talent. There’s no question about it," said Future Works Executive Director, Kevin Lynn.
Future Works told Western Mass News that this is the earliest they've ever seen businesses start to hire seasonal work, but there's a reason behind their early start.
"Usually what we see is around mid-October the holiday hiring start ramping up. This is quite a surprise for us, but when you think about it, it’s a company saying, 'look I don’t want to wait when everyone else is hiring," Lynn explained.
Dina Dongorov visits Future Works frequently. She said it's important to have a resource like this in the area.
"I look for references and apply for jobs. At this point, today, I am filling out some paperwork for a program that helps me get a little bit more skills so I could find a job in the future," Dongorov added.
From JC Penney, to Target, and Kohls, Future Works said that all the big companies are hiring.
Even UPS will be in town next week for a job fair.
"They’re hiring drivers, driver helpers, package handlers. For the driver positions and package handlers it’s $18.75 a hour and that’s a pretty good wage. They know they have to lock down the staff and in their business they cannot be without. When do they make it? They make it during the holiday season. That rush is everything to them," said Lynn.
