On Friday, people are taking a moment to remember the devastating tornado from seven years ago.

It was exactly 4:38 p.m. on June 1, 2011 when the tornado touched down. A number of western Massachusetts communities were affected by the EF-3 tornado.

The tornado also claimed the lives of two people in West Springfield, and one in Brimfield.

A moment of silence was observed around the city to remember those who were lost Friday afternoon.

With over $3.7 billion in economic development projects underway, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said this is a testament to the patience and fortitude the city has exhibited over the past seven years.

Mayor Sarno said he’s looking forward to what the city of Springfield has to offer in the future.
