SOUTH HADLEY, MA (WGGB/WSHM)--The state has approved two more learning days for South Hadley High School students while their building remains closed for mold remediation which is still underway.

High school students will learn virtually again Thursday and Friday, but officials are planning for everyone to be back in the building come Tuesday.

In a letter sent by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to South Hadley superintendent Jahmal Mosley, 40 out of 81 spaces in the high school have passed testing and are ready to be open.

The plan is to continue cleaning the building over the next several days to open for in-person school on Tuesday. DESE Commissioner Jeffrey Riley said the high school will only need to provide a minimum of 173 in-person learning days this year.

The high school is only allowed seven remote learning days this year and all seven will be used by Friday.

Parents told Western Mass News students planned to have Monday off due to a teacher professional development day. They're glad the rest of this week is figured out, but worry about what will happen if the school isn't ready by Tuesday.

"We kind of expected that the state would come along and approve a couple of days but again it’s every day that goes by we don’t know we’re just playing it by ear and happy to hear that at least they have something to go with it," said parent Amir Kouzehkanani.

The state said if the school does not open Tuesday, all other missed days will need to be made up later in the year.
