Officials believe some well-trained eyes and technology in the sky may have helped avert a disaster.

Mass. State Police said that around 11 p.m. Thursday, one of their Air Wing units was over Lawrence providing support with the ongoing response to the gas fires and explosions that took place earlier in the day.

A trooper was using the helicopter's infrared camera when he discovered something abnormal under the pavement at one intersection and alerted Lawrence Fire.

Crews arrived and found what was described as a major gas leak under the pavement.

"Through their attention to detail, the crew of MSP Air 5 likely prevented another catastrophic event," State Police said in a statement.
