State police investigate fatal car accident in East Longmeadow

State and East Longmeadow police investigated a fatal car accident on Prospect Street in East Longmeadow Monday night.

State police are investigating a fatal car accident that occurred on Chestnut Street in East Longmeadow Monday night.

East Longmeadow police Sgt. Dan Manley told Western Mass News they were called to the one-car accident around 9:30 P.M. Monday between Shaker Road and Prospect Street.

Investigators said the car left the road, hitting a stone wall and a tree.

A driver and a passenger were taken to Baystate Medical Center where the passenger, 30-year-old Daniel Federici of Springfield was pronounced dead. Police said he was not wearing a speed belt. The driver of the car was only being identified as a 34-year-old man from East Longmeadow. The extent of his injuries was not known.

Authorities said the cause of the crash was still under investigation but speed appeared to be a factor and charges may be pending.

Police said the reconstruction team was going to close the road again Tuesday around 11 A.M.
