A suspect has been arrested after a day-long search for a man with a knife.

Palmer Police Lt. Christopher Burns told Western Mass News that around 11:45 a.m. Friday, police were called to 4009 Pine Street in the Thorndike section of town for a report of a man assaulting a resident with a knife.

More 911 calls then came into police reporting that another person was armed with a gun and shots were fired.

As officers got on-scene, the man with the knife took off into a wooded area and police gave chase.

Burns said that the person with the shotgun has been identified and is cooperating with police.

Palmer Public Schools, as well as Pathfinder Regional Schools, were put into lockdown as a precaution due to the nature of the incident, the proximity of the schools to the scene, and the suspect being on the run.

Officers were stationed at all schools during that lockdown.

A message sent to families from the school district indicated that the lockdown was due to "an incident" in town and that the students were safe.

There were crowds of parents all over town on Friday, huddled waiting to pick their children up from school as police searched for that man.

Schools have since released students, which occurred around 2:45 p.m.

Western Mass News spoke to a woman who said that she lives next door to a man whose apartment was broken into by the alleged suspect.

"Next door, he broke into our neighbors and kicked in the door of the garage, my neighbors on the other side, and slashed my son's tires in the driveway, so my neighbor chased him around the building a couple times is what they're telling me and is still on the run," said Teresa Davis.

Burns said that officers, along with K-9s from Ludlow Police and Monson Police and the State Police Airwing, searched for several hours, but that suspect with the knife evaded capture.

The suspect was described as a white male, about 5'10" tall, with an average build and light colored hair. He was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt with red lettering on the front and camouflaged pants. Police added that he was armed with a knife.

"There were reports that the suspect may have had a hand gun in his possession. However, that has not been confirmed at this time," Burns noted.

Just before 6 p.m. Friday, a suspect matching that description was arrested by Palmer Police. No other information was immediately available.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Church Street, from River Street to Main Street, was closed for a time due to police activity, but has since reopened.
