It's is a story that reaches from the eastern-most part of Massachusetts all the way west, as the state mourns the young officer killed in the line of duty.

The suspect in this fatal officer shooting had a quick arraignment in Barnstable.

Police allege that Latanowich fatally shot Yarmouth Police Officer Sean Gannon, a 32-year-old with ties to western Massachusetts.

This all happened while Gannon was serving an arrest warrant at a Marstons Mills home.

Gannon attended Westfield State University and later earned a master's degree from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

After the shooting yesterday, Gannon was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gannon's police dog, Nero, was injured and will have surgery today.

Police say the suspect, Latanowich, is a 'career criminal' who has more than 100 criminal charges.

It's not clear why he was at the home at the time of the shooting.

As for the fallen officer, Gannon joined the Yarmouth Police Department in December 2010 and became the department's first full-time drug detection K-9 patrol officer in December 2011.

According to the Yarmouth Police Department, Gannon leaves behind a wife.

A not guilty plea was entered Friday on Latanowich's behalf. He is due back in court for a probable cause hearing on June 26.

We will have more on the arraignment tonight starting at 5 p.m. on ABC40
