West Springfield drowning victim identified

West Springfield fire officials have identified the man who drowned in the Westfield River Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses say Wilfredo Dones-Guzman, 24, of Holyoke jumped into the river just after 2 p.m. behind the Diamond Gold Connection on Park Street, but never emerged from the water.

Luis Alicee was also at the river, and jumped in after Dones-Guzman.

"I just grabbed him by the shoulder and pushed him up, but once I got him up I couldn't keep myself up, so my other friend came and helped me bring him to the rock," said Alicee.

CPR was administered on the scene. Dones-Guzman was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
