The Westfield Fire Department reports that they have responded to a massive fire at the Powdermill Village Apartment Complex on Union Street around two this afternoon.

Furious flames consumed the building as winds fanned the fire, the pungent odor of smoke filling the air.

Victor Otero lives in a neighboring building in the Powdermill Village Complex.

His mother and brother called in a panic that their unit was going up in flames.

“The whole thing engulfed,” began Victor. “I went in there, took my mother out…she’s in a wheelchair, and my handicapped brother. then, the lady next door, she needed help, and l wheeled them out, too."

Shadowy plumes of smoke could be seen for miles.

Fire crews continued to work into the afternoon to control the blaze.

“My heart is still pounding,” says Victor.

Dozens of firefighters worked on the ground and up on the ladder to knock the fire down.

Several departments including West Springfield, Holyoke and Southampton were on scene.

“I know a lot of people are going to be displaced by this,” Victor stated.

Many of the details are still unfolding, but Otero says he is relieved that his family is alive and well.

“I’m happy that everybody got out of their apartments,” Victor went on to say. “Everybody is safe. that’s material. We’ll get it back.”
