(Meredith/AP) – A Houston homeowner fatally shot three men who forced their way into his house on Saturday, police said.

Just before 1 a.m., at least four suspects stormed the residence and triggered a shootout, the Houston Chronicle reported. The homeowner grabbed his gun and defended himself by firing on the suspects, killing three of them, according to a preliminary police investigation.

Responding officers found the body of one suspect in the front yard. Another suspect who tried to run away collapsed nearby and died. Authorities said the body of a third suspect was found in a vehicle that fled the scene and hit a pole two blocks away.

A fourth suspect was shot and taken to a hospital for treatment. The homeowner was not injured.

It’s not clear why the suspects targeted the home. Police have not released any additional information.
