(Meredith/CNN) -- A North Carolina woman was browsing the aisles at Target when she spotted a snake slithering across some canned beans.

Diana Dupre recorded cellphone video of the reptile on a Target shelf in Apex on Monday. She told CNN's Jeanne Moos that she didn't realize the snake was real until she took a closer look.

"I thought it was a child's toy. So, I thought, 'Oh my goodness, somebody's pranking me. Where's the camera?'" she said. "The tongue came out, that's how I knew."

Thankfully, the snake was nonvenomous. It was a harmless rat snake that Target employees eventually removed and safely released back to nature.

Target said it also sanitized the area and brought in a pest control company to do a full evaluation of the store.
