Father says 3-year-old son is fighting for his life after brutal beating; ex-wife, boyfriend arrested

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA/Gray News) - A Texas father says his child remains in the hospital after he was brutally beaten earlier this month.

Dahrian Zamora said his 3-year-old son, Dawson, was beaten on Oct. 14 and has remained hospitalized fighting for his life ever since.

According to Zamora, he received a call that day from child protective services, saying that his son had suffered severe injuries.

Zamora said he would later find out that his ex-wife’s boyfriend, Christopher Alexander, was arrested and charged with injury to a child.

“He was beaten so bad that he was beaten to death, and that’s public knowledge of what I’ve already said,” Zamora said. “He did beat my son to death; that he did kill him. When he got to the lobby of Medical Center McKinney, he was already dead.”

Zamora said his son’s condition has not improved.

“I can tell you that he’s had no improvement,” he said. “He has global brain damage, and he’s still on life support and has not improved.”

According to police records, Alexander was previously convicted of theft and unlawful restraint. He was recently indicted for stalking.

Authorities said his bond has been revoked regarding his most recent charges.

“In the CT scan and MRI scan, there was found prior bruising that did not coincide with the healing process of the current bruises that are on him now,” Zamora said. “He was beaten before this attack. The attack that killed him wasn’t the only attack. There’s prior abuse in the home.”

Authorities said Chelsea Berg, Dawson’s mother, was also arrested. She is facing a charge of injury to a child by omission. She was granted a $100,000 bond and released the same day.

“He [Alexander] had an ankle monitor, Chelsea knew that. He was dealing with stalking allegations, Chelsea knew that,” he said.

According to Zamora, he’s been granted custody of both os his children, and Berg is not allowed within 500 yards of the kids.

Zamora said there is a conflict regarding medical decisions for his son.

“It’s getting nasty, and that’s the part of good versus evil,” he said. “Like what’s humane and what’s not. What’s in the best interest of my son? How would we feel as an individual if we were in his situation? What would we want for ourselves? What would we want for our children?”

Dawson is still in the intensive care unit. He will need extensive medical care, his father said.

Loved ones have since started a GoFundMe in Dawon’s name.
