The court filings on Monday revealed Daniel Mincey stabbed JaSire Peterson, a redshirt freshman from Union City, NJ, and Joshua Underwood, a freshman from Fultondale.

Mincey is facing attempted murder charges for the attack on Peterson and first-degree assault charges in the Underwood case.

Police say officers responded to the Football Operations Center at UAB on Saturday where Peterson and Underwood were taken to the hospital for their injuries.

During a news conference Monday morning, Interim Head Coach Alex Mortensen said the two injured players are recovering after being released from the hospital.

Mortensen expressed that one of the most important things is the well-being of the student-athletes.

Leaders said they considered not playing Saturday’s game against South Florida and only decided to after knowing the injured players were in stable condition and the rest of the team felt comfortable.

Counseling services are available for players, with Mortensen telling players to take time for themselves if needed, whether that means missing practice or not playing in this weekend’s game. He said it’s a fluid situation that impacts everyone differently.

"We’ve opened the door every time we’re together to say hey, whatever you’re feeling - maybe it seems you felt over the weekend, but maybe they’re hitting you now. Or it might be Wednesday or Thursday - look, get the help you need. Step away if you need to step away,” Mortensen said. “So I think that’s the first thing is that they know we care and love for them as people, as human beings, way before them being a football player.”
