ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - An Alabama man has been indicted on a reckless murder charge. He is accused of driving under the influence when he crashed and killed his sister.

Kevin A. Owens, 36, is charged with reckless murder in the death of his sister, 40-year-old Lisa O. Fitts. He was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol when he crashed, killing her.

Fitts died May 21, 2025, when the vehicle she was a passenger in left the roadway and struck a culvert in Etowah County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. After the initial impact, ALEA says the car overturned and hit a house.

Fitts was pronounced dead at the scene, and Owens, who was driving, was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital for treatment.

Officials say that neither Fitts nor Owens was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Owens was booked in the Etowah County Jail but has since bonded out.
