School supply giveaway held in Springfield’s Adams Park

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - For those soon heading back to school, a sneaker and bookbag giveaway was held at Adams Park in Springfield.

It was for the Alvin J. McKenzie Scholarship Fund, dedicated to a graduate of Springfield College who sadly lost his life to cancer, The McKenzie family put on the event to benefit kids in need. Everything was free — food, sneakers, school supplies and more.

Mayor Domenic Sarno was in attendance. He commended the family for their efforts and expressed his support for the mission, “helping kids and families go back to school with sneakers, backpacks, school supplies. And that’s what, up in heaven, Mr. McKenzie and the family wanted. So, even as he’s up in heaven, he’s still giving back to his family.”

This was the second year of the event, but the family said it’ll just be one of many more.
