Springfield Police arrest 2 after report of gunfire near Van Horn Park
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- Two men have been arrested after gunfire was reported in a Springfield neighborhood over the weekend.
Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said officers responded to the area of Wait and Langdon Streets around 7:55 a.m. Saturday for a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they heard gunfire near Penacook Street and saw two men running into Van Horn Park.
Police went into the park and detained one of the men, 22-year-old Felix Berrios of Springfield. The other man, 26-year-old Joniel Cotto of Springfield, allegedly dropped a can of nitrous oxide and kept running, but he was detained a short time later after a brief foot chase.
Berrios allegedly told officers that he had a gun and police recovered a gun capable of holding 12 rounds of ammunition from his waistband. They also reportedly recovered crack-cocaine from him. Investigators then also found evidence of gunfire on the 0-100 block of Langdon Street.
Berrios and Cotto were both arrested on several gun-related charges. Berrios is facing additional charges of possession with intent to distribute a Class B drug and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, while Cotto is additionally charged with inhaling a toxic substance.
