SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- Cleanup work is underway at the former Vibra Hospital on State Street after the property owners paid the agreed-upon costs, Mayor Domenic Sarno said.

The hospital officially closed in 2023. Since then, city officials, including Sarno, have called on the owners to maintain the property as it fell into disrepair and posed dangers to public safety.

City officials say the property has had several break-ins, squatters and fires since the closure. The city recently took legal action to get the owners to fix up the site.

The owners signed a court agreement in Housing Court last month. Sarno said the owners have paid the agreed-upon costs and that cleanup work is underway.

Much of the overgrown vegetation and trash in front of the property has been cleared. Officials say the cleanup in front of the property is mostly complete, while work continues in the back.
