SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The Springfield Police Department is hosting its annual Project Blue Light ceremony on Thursday honoring the bravery and sacrifice of fallen law enforcement officers.

This event serves as a heartfelt tribute to police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, reminding us of all their bravery and the sacrifices made to keep our community safe.

The Project Blue Light ceremony will take place on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Springfield Police Headquarters.

The ceremony will feature remarks from Mayor Domenic Sarno and Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers, who will emphasize the importance of remembering these brave individuals, especially during the holidays.

Project blue light first started back in 1988 when a grieving mother-in-law decided to honor her loved ones by placing two blue lights in her window.

Today, this act of remembrance has evolved into a nationwide initiative, reflecting nearly 15,000 families of fallen officers across the United States.

The blue lights symbolizing hope, and the commitment to never forget those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
