4 people displaced following Springfield fire

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - An investigation is underway after fire broke out at a Springfield home.

Springfield firefighters were called to Belmont Avenue shortly around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Fire officials added that one firefighter was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. In addition, one dog had to be rescued and is in the care of the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center.

“I saw smoke, black smoke just up in the air, so I drove down here just to see and sure enough something was on fire,” witness Kimberly Weir recalled. “I went running to their house to bang on the door with another gentleman. It’s a two family home. Then banging on the door of the neighbors’ houses because the wind was blowing towards the neighbors house.”

Four people, all adults, have been displaced.

The cause is still under investigation by the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad.
