SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Several people were forced out of their home in Springfield when a fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon. That fire taking place on 135 Pendleton Avenue and leaving seven people, and a pet cat, without a place to stay.

When our Western Mass News crews arrived just after 2:15 p.m., there were over a dozen first responders there working to clear the scene. We spoke with Springfield Fire Commissioner B.J. Calvi.

He told us the call to Pendleton Ave came into just after 2 p.m, and when crews arrived on scene, they saw heavy fire on the second floor extending to the roof of the home. He says crews acted fast, preventing further damage to surrounding homes.

“It was a relatively quick knockdown, put a two and half in the service right away and got the fire knocked down from outside, then we did what’s called a transitional attack and got inside and mopped up the rest of it and did a search.”

Calvi told us all occupants were out of the home when crews arrived, and the pet cat was later rescued. At this time no injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire was accidental and caused by cooking.

All other details regarding Wednesday’s fire are limited at this time but stick with us both on air and online for the latest information on this incident as it comes into our newsroom.
