Bail reduced for suspect in deadly Springfield crash involving bicyclist
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The legal proceedings are continuing for a man accused of striking and killing a bicyclist in Springfield and leaving the scene and, on Wednesday, he appeared in Springfield Superior Court for a bail reduction hearing.
The suspect, 46-year-old Carlos Reyes, was in court to see if he could get his $250,000 bail reduced to just $5,000. On Wednesday, a judge allowed the bail petition and now set it at $75,000 cash.
Reyes’s arrest stemmed back to March 27 when he, while driving a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado, allegedly struck a bicyclist, 30-year-old Aronde Odom, who was walking his bike across the street in the Indian Orchard neighborhood. Odom died from his injuries shortly thereafter.
Springfield Police said Reyes turned himself in the next day and is currently facing several charges including a felony for leaving the scene of personal injury and death and operating a vehicle with a suspended license.
We spoke with Odom’s girlfriend on the day of Reyes’s arraignment. “Not only did you just hit someone and you knew you were in the wrong, you hit someone and you injured somebody, but you left him there. Why did you leave?” she asked. “You just left somebody there to die. Someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s life partner.”
There’s no word yet on when Reyes will next appear in court.
